Back

Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg and Queensland Assistant Minister for Primary Industry Development, Water and Western Queensland Sean Dillon made a flying visit to Paroo Shire yesterday to make the long-awaited announcement that a new bridge over the Paroo River at Eulo is included in the $155 million in betterment works to be delivered by the Albanese and Crisafulli Governments.  Finally, the Paroo River crossing at Eulo will be upgraded!

“These routes are critical for resupply and connectivity for rural and regional communities across Western Queensland,” said Minister Mickelberg.

Paroo Shire Mayor, Suzette Beresford said the locals have been waiting for this for a long, long time as she thanked the ministers on the banks of the river.

“This will mean not only a huge benefit to us, but also our neighbours in the Bulloo Shire for essential supplies, mail and medical services. It will build the capacity to keep our communities connected.”

The bridge is estimated to be completed in three years – 2028 - at a cost of $51 million. It will be wider and able to handle the weight of two road trains. The bridge will replace the current one that was built in 1928 making it almost 100 years old when the new bridge will open.

Other betterment works included in the $155 million announcement were:

  • Eyre Developmental Road – Cuttaburra crossing upgrade
  • Balonne Highway (St George – Cunnamulla) – Wallam Creek drainage upgrades
  • Diamantina Developmental Road (Charleville – Quilpie) – upgrades to Warrego River and Ward River floodways and Quilberry Creek drainage
  • Quilpie – Thargomindah Road – South Comongin Crossing upgrade
  • Hungerford Road – Paroo River crossing upgrade
