New Bike Track Thrilling Outback Children in Cunnamulla
In 2023, the Queensland Police Service and Paroo Shire Council, together with partner organisations Cunnamulla Aboriginal Corporation for Health (CACH), QFES, QAS, local retailers and various local sporting clubs arranged a bike safety event in the Cunnamulla CBD. The event included a family BBQ, market stalls and road safety activities run in Jane ST outside the NAB bank. Local Sponsors contributed consumables, prizes and giveaways to the event.
There was great interest and enthusiasm generated by this initial event and local Police Officers approached Council to investigate a more permanent site for bike safety and enjoyable riding, with any site and layout particularly aimed at the under 10-year-old cohort.
Council subsequently allocated $250,000 from their State Government “Works for Queensland” program budget in the 2024/25 financial year to bring this goal to reality.
“Council was so impressed by the enthusiasm of the community and children at the family fun day that we thought it was important to provide a long-term facility that would be both healthy and educational for our younger generation,” Paroo Shire Mayor Suzette Beresford said.
Council staff investigated various other facilities in the region and designed a track that would both educate and entertain younger kids in relation to road safety and road rules.
There’s miniature cattle grids to cross, speed bumps, give-way signs, a round-about and even a pedestrian crossing along with other items along the track winding through the park.
The project was constructed by Exceed Concrete Construction, Russell's Grader Hire and Council staff in June / July 2025 and has been extremely well received by the community, with many kids taking advantage of its great location and fun layout to test their skills.
Mayor Suzette Beresford said, “It’s really terrific to see how well Council delivered this project and how excited the kids are to be out using it. The project has enhanced our wonderful Centenary Park into a must visit facility for locals and visitors alike.”
