Community Requests
At the April meeting Council considered a number of requests for assistance from community groups and organisations towards forthcoming events. A level of in-kind and/or financial assistance was provided to the HOPE Program, Cunnamulla Show Society, Qld. Police Service for movie nights and Blue Light Discos, Eulo Polocrosse Club, Cunnamulla Gun Club and the Sacred Heart Parish School PPF.

Emergency Flood Repairs

A disaster declaration has been made for the Paroo Shire Council area relating to Wednesday 19 January rainfall event. A number of emergency road repair works were required to make roads safe, particularly the Humeburn, Mt Alfred and Cuttaburra Roads. Council staff are currently in the process of recording some of the damage and once completed, the information will be submitted to the Qld. Reconstruction Authority for approval to commence reinstatement work.

Welcome to Paroo

Last month Council hosted a Welcome to Paroo function for newly arrived residents, providing them the opportunity to meet and mingle with some of the local residents and learn a bit about what activities and support is available within the community. About 80 people attended and were treated to a fantastic array of food from different nationalities.

DDSW Council of Mayors

The Paroo Shire also welcomed Mayors and CEOs from the ten local governments within the Darling Downs and South West (DDSW) region to Cunnamulla in late March for their scheduled meeting, together with a number of government and organisational representatives. Prior to the meeting day, delegates were able to partake in a cultural tour, attend the “Cunnamulla All Aboard” show and dine under fairylights at the Shire Hall courtyard. A big thank you to all the Council staff involved in making this event such a success.

Library Services

Feedback is being sought from members of the Wyandra community about the future of the Wyandra Library. It has been closed for six months now due to staff shortages but had previously recorded low visitation numbers. Council is currently considering the on-going maintenance and operational costs involved with the library and would welcome input from Wyandra residents. Feedback should be forwarded to council@paroo.qld.gov.au by Friday 29 April.

River Lights Festival

A preview of a new festival called River Lights was held on Saturday 23 April. This year’s event commenced on the 22 and 23 April with lantern making and decorating workshops in Centenary Park which were then part of the lantern procession in the festival. There was then market and food stalls, storytelling and lighting installations in Centenary Park from late afternoon into the evening. The event concluded with a procession of lanterns to the Darby Land Bridge to witness a spectacular light show over the Warrego River. It was a fantastic preview of what will be even bigger and better next year.
