Greg Grainger and film crew for Travel Oz recently visited Cunnamulla and recorded footage of the Cunnamulla Fella Visitor Information Centre and the Bushlands in conjunction with Acting Tourism Manager, Philippa Hooker and Mayor Suzette Beresford. The footage will feature on the show Travel Oz on the Seven Network.

The TV show Outback Opal Hunters will be returning to Yowah to film a team of opal miners, Council has granted their request to film in the public areas of Yowah for the series as they did previously when the show recorded the discovery of a valuable Yowah Opal Nut.

An ongoing “Monthly Council Update” appears in the South West Newspaper to assist with communication as we realise many of our residents do not have social media, you may also hear Mayor Suzette Beresford chatting on local radio as part of the effort to keep our community well informed.

Grant Funds

Paroo Shire Council has been advised that the following grant applications have been successful:

  • Qld Feral Pest Initiative Round 5 for cluster fencing $1m
  • SES Support Funding for Yowah Extension $6,756
  • Remote Airstrip Upgrade Program (Yowah Airstrip upgrade) $150,000
  • Rural & Remote Mental Health Initiative $75,000

Councillor Remuneration

Advice was received from the Local Government Remuneration Commission in relation to setting remuneration levels for Councillors as from 1 July 2021.

The total annual remuneration available to category 1 Councils is $332,987, it was decided by resolution to set the remuneration levels for the 2021/2022 financial year at the following amounts which totals to $265,844 and is $67,143 or 20% below the recommended amount.

  • Mayor              $94,769
  • Deputy Mayor $49,470
  • Councillors      $40,535

Carbon Farming Study

Council received a draft Terms of Reference for discussion from the SWQROC for a study to assess the economic, social and environmental impacts from ERF native forest regeneration projects in South West Queensland, the Terms of Reference will provide the scope of work to be undertaken, the methodology and other matters pertaining to the study. It will be a joint venture between the Federal Government, State Government and the South West Queensland Region of Councils.

Cunnamulla Fella Roundup

Planning for the Roundup to be held from 30th June to 3rd July is well underway, the first three days of the Roundup will be a Junior Rodeo School for youth aged 12 – 17.

The final day (Saturday) will have barrel racing in the morning and a rodeo in the afternoon followed by a Drought Angels concert in the evening. The evening concert will be free of charge and feature Tania Kernigan along with three other artists.
