Mayor Beresford’s September Meeting Wrap-up

Economic Development
The visual appearance of a town has a significant impact on visitor perceptions, business confidence, investment attraction and community pride. With this in mind, the Council has adopted a program to improve the visual presentation and appeal of Cunnamulla through a number of initiatives that will be implemented over the next seven months. The program will include enhancement to the town entrance, signage rationalisation, improving the streetscape and low cost window graphics, assistance with residential presentation as well as other initiatives that will deliver visible and measurable improvements.
Tourism
Council endorsed the use of the Queensland South West Six brand style guide as the basis for developing a new regional drive tourism product for the south west region. The new branding will replace the current Natural Sciences Loop and include all six shires that comprise the SWQROC. The project is funded by the Qld. Government’s Remote Area Board Program and Krista Hauritz Tourism & Events was engaged by the SWQROC to manage and deliver the drive product development component. The project will proceed further once endorsement by all six SWQROC Councils is received.
Cunnamulla Library
The Cunnamulla Library will be closed from 17th September, reopening on Monday 28th September to allow for the installation of new flooring that will enhance the library environment for the community.
Infrastructure Operations
Following a recent severe weather event, Council has submitted a claim for approximately $10M additional REPA works associated with this new flood event to the Qld Reconstruction Authority for assessment.
The new toilet blocks at John Kerr Park and the Tennis Courts have been installed in accordance with the John Kerr Park Precinct Masterplan. Further funding will be sought to continue implementing the upgrades and infrastructure replacement included in the plan.
Christmas Closedown
The Council office and library will be closed from Wednesday 22nd December 2026 and re-open on Monday 4th January 2027. The Outside workforce will commence leave on Monday 21st December 2026 and return to work on Monday 11th January 2027.
