Paroo Shire Council has been successful in securing a grant of $40,000 to restore the heritage-listed Cunnamulla War Memorial Fountain to its former glory as a fully functional fountain.

Located on the corner of John and Jane streets, the Cunnamulla War Memorial Fountain has been a symbol of sacrifice and bravery since its construction in 1924.

Paroo Shire Mayor, Cr Suzette Beresford explains that as the fountain is heritage-listed and is one of only two memorial fountains in Australia, its restoration is a very specialised process.

“We’re excited to hear that our funding submission has been successful as honouring our past, present and future servicemen and women has always been important to the community,” Cr Beresford said.

“The fountain is where we hold events such as ANZAC Day services, so it holds a special place in a lot of hearts across Paroo Shire.”

The fountain restoration is one of thirteen projects across the State that will receive funding under the final round of the Queensland Veterans’ Memorial Grants Program.

On 27 September, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said that war memorials are treasured and dignified sites for communities to reflect on the sacrifice and service of Queenslanders.

“It is important the memorials are preserved so that future generations can remember and honour the contribution of our servicemen and women,” the Premier said.

Bruce Allardice, President of Cunnamulla RSL, expressed the RSL’s happiness to hear that Council have been successful in receiving the grant.

“To restore such an important monument in our town is especially important to local RSL members, and we know the wider community will be very glad to see it refurbished too.”

This project is proudly supported by the Queensland Government.
