Paroo Shire Disaster Management Risk Assessment & Plan Underway

Council was successful in securing funding to undertake a disaster risk assessment for the Paroo Shire with the objective of identifying known disaster risks, with subsequent treatment options to be outlined in a new Disaster Management Plan. This project will have regard for all legislative and regulatory requirements for risks and disaster management principles. The assessment will involve broad consultation with key stakeholders in the Shire, organizations and particularly members of the Local Disaster Management Group which met earlier in August to commence the process. Risks such as flooding, fires and severe storms were readily identified by the group and discussions held on mitigation strategies relating to each risk. Council plays a vital role in Disaster Management within the Shire and this project will strengthen the community’s capacity to deal with potential risks as they arise. Further information can be found on Council’s website and comments from the community are encouraged.

MayorJo Sheppard said “we were very pleased with attendance and participation in our first meeting for this project. The value of local knowledge amongst some of the longer term members of our Local Disaster Management Group is invaluable and will be really important in this process.”
